Where to Get a Mexican Mocha Around San Antonio

Growing up in San Antonio, I remember mornings spent sitting around the kitchen table with my tías and mom, drinking cafecito, and talking about life. It’s a core memory full of laughter, stories, support, and the start of my love for a good cup of joe paired with a breakfast taco on a homemade flour tortilla. (Please note: A breakfast taco is not the same as a breakfast burrito, in case the thought crossed your mind.) As I’ve gotten older, I’ve ventured out from just a plain cup to what is now a personal favorite: Mexican Mochas (and other local variations).

What is a Mexican Mocha? It’s a coffee-based drink with the added flavor of Mexican chocolate and can also include espresso, cinnamon, or other ingredients. My favorite thing about this drink is that it’s the perfect drink for coffee lovers who are looking to kick it up a notch but don’t want something that’s too sweet. Here are my top three places around the city to get a Mexican Mocha this fall.

Barrio Barista

This westside gem was the first place I had a Mexican Mocha. It’s the perfect balance of coffee, creamy goodness, and Mexican hot chocolate. They also offer a small menu of bites, including their infamous Westside Special featuring their barbacoa grilled cheese. There’s plenty of seating both indoors and out, and the staff is always extremely pleasant.

Mildfire Coffee Co.

Located in north central San Antonio, Mildfire offers a variation called Aztec Mocha. It’s made with espresso and cayenne peppers, which gives it a great little kick to get you going on a slow morning. They have limited indoor seating and offer various pastries depending on the day.

Southbound Coffee

Located just outside of downtown San Antonio, Southbound Coffee offers its own twist on a Mexican Mocha, which includes a double shot of espresso, Mexican chocolate, and cinnamon to top it off.
