San Antonio’s Top Kid-Friendly Restaurants

Let’s be honest for a minute. Dining out with children in tow can be, well, interesting. But, it doesn’t have to be impossible! In fact, with the right setting, it can be downright enjoyable and allow your family some quality bonding time (and relieve you from kitchen duty). Fortunately, since San Antonio is such a family-friendly city, we have options—lots of options!—for places to eat with kids. ALAMO CITY CLASSICS

Alamo Cafe on 281

Location: 14250 San Pedro Ave., San Antonio, TX 78232
Mom-Approved: This Alamo Cafe location has a great outdoor area where the kids can hang out, and the service is quick.
Menu Recommendations: Queso and warm tortillas—need we say more?!

Beto’s

Location: 8142 Broadway St., San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: The food at Beto’s is different from your standard local Tex-Mex joints, but the place has a similar vibe. Beto’s has a great little patio with picnic tables and a playscape. They offer a varied children’s menu with $4.25 entrees like grilled chicken strips and bean & cheese tacos that come with carrot sticks and Jell-o cups—a nice change from the typical French fries!
Menu Recommendations: Try the empanadas (both sweet and savory), the chicken nachos, or their top-notch burger.

EZ’s Brick Oven & Grill

Location: Multiple – Alamo Heights: 6498 N. New Braunfels Ave.; 281 & Bitters: 734 W. Bitters Road
Mom-Approved: EZ’s menu has loads of options for kids – the usual offerings and healthy sides, too! Be sure to grab a milkshake to share. Oh, and kids eat free every Wednesday from 5 p.m to close with the purchase of an adult entrée.
Menu Recommendations: The oven-roasted rosemary chicken is a classic; all burgers can be customized – pair them with curly or sweet potato fries; and, the 09’er pizza is super tasty and super sharable!

Magic Time Machine

Location: 902 NE Interstate 410 Loop, San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: The Magic Time Machine’s dining room transports you and your kiddos into another place in time – think faraway lands of pirates, princesses, superheroes, and more! Servers are friendly, funny, and always stay in character. The menu has loads of variety to please even the pickiest eaters – adults and kids, alike.
Menu Recommendations: Adults can choose from hand-cut steaks, prime ribs, sandwiches, and fresh seafood offerings. Kids have two full menus to choose from– young adults and kids and traditional kids – and the popcorn shrimp is always a favorite.

Paesanos

Location: Multiple – Lincoln Heights – 555 East Basse, San Antonio, Texas 78209; Paeasnos River Walk – 111 W. Crockett Street, Suite 101, San Antonio, Texas 78205; Paesanos 1604 – North West 3622 Paesanos Parkway, San Antonio, Texas 78231
Mom-Approved: All locations are family-friendly, but the 1604 location has an exceptional patio with a koi pond where kids can gather and feed the fish.
Menu Recommendations: For 50 years, Paesanos has been serving up Italian classics. Don’t miss their famous Shrimp Paesano (appetizer or entrée)! Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available. Kids can choose from a fancy kids menu of choices or customize any pasta dish any which way they list.

Perico’s

Location: 1439 E. Sonterra Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78258
Mom-Approved: Good food, good drinks, great patio, and the kids love the playground. You can have a margarita and relax while they play.
Menu Recommendations: Order the smothered chicken tacos or, for something lighter, the tortilla soup.

Scenic Loop Cafe

Location: 25615 Boerne Stage Rd. (at Scenic Loop), San Antonio, TX 78255
Mom-Approved: Scenic Loop Cafe has a Hill Country feel and a great patio with a playscape. The menu is more varied than our favorite kid-friendly burger joints.
Menu Recommendations: The Shrimp en Brochette is a delicious starter, and the Chicken Poblano and Braised Pork Shank are ahhh-mazing!

The Cove

Location: 606 W Cypress St, San Antonio, TX 78212
Mom-Approved: Giving San Antonio a little of that “Austin-vibe”, The Cove is one eclectic joint.  A laundromat, a car-wash, a restaurant, a beer garden, and live music venue, it certainly offers a little something for everyone.  Their patio surrounds a huge play-yard and is equipped with misters for those super hot summer days.  If the heat gets to you, sit inside and enjoy the local music that kids can dance along to.
Menu Recommendations: Try their fish tacos and sweet potato fries – this is a great spot for vegetarians and gluten-free dining, as well. 

Willie’s Grill & Icehouse

Mom-Approved: Willie’s has a sandbox for the kids to play in that they love! The patio is great, and the atmosphere is definitely accepting of a rowdy table full of kids.
Menu Recommendations: The blackened Baja Fish Tacos are super yummy! Also, fried pickles are the way to go for a sharable appetizer.

4BREAKFAST FAVORITES

Bird Bakery

Location: 5912 Broadway, San Antonio, Texas 78209
Mom-Approved: Cupcakes, pies, and cookies, oh my! Known for their dainty and delicious bakery items, Bird Bakery’s breakfast menu is equally yummy with loads of options for kids – think seasonal muffins and handmade granola. Their space is light and bright with plenty of seating for families and small groups.
Menu Recommendations: You really can’t go wrong with their baked goods, but be sure to try the pimento cheese popover and breakfast casserole. Then treat yourself to a mini cupcake, because why not?

Duck Donuts

Location: 11703 Huebner Rd #113, San Antonio, TX 78230
Mom-Approved: Who doesn’t love a “warm, delicious, and made to order” donut?! The space is family-friendly and kids can design their own donuts – so cool!
Menu Recommendations: All the donuts! Choose from the classics or create a unique flavor combo all your own. Seasonal flavors also rotate regularly. Pair it all with freshly brewed coffee or chocolate milk for the littles.

Snooze, an AM Eatery

Location: Multiple – The Quarry – 255 East Basse Road Suite 160, San Antonio, TX 78209; The Strand – 11255 Huebner Rd Suite 100, San Antonio, TX 78230; The Vineyard – 1305 N. Loop 1604 W., San Antonio, Texas 78258
Mom-Approved: If you arrive early, there’s typically little to no wait for a table as the restaurant works in a first-come, first-serve manner. Booth seating and spacious patios allow kiddos to be comfortable and a little loud without anyone noticing. And, all entrees’ – for adults and kiddos – are customizable for your pickiest eaters.
Menu Recommendations: For extra hungry adults, try a “breakfast sammie.” For lighter fare, try the BRAVOcado Toast or sweet potato hash. Kids have a full menu to choose from – think classics like pancakes, waffles, and eggs. And, adults can peruse a morning cocktail menu, too!

The Magnolia Pancake Haus

Mom-Approved: Early morning hours for those families with kiddos who rise before the sun; also, both locations serve a free pancake to kids.
Menu Recommendations: World’s best pancakes! Try their seasonal flavors – think stone fruit, spice, and pumpkin. Or, take the traditional route and order their “friends with bennies” options or awesome omelets.

3BBQ, BURGERS, & MORE

Alamo BBQ

Location: 511 E. Grayson, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: This Jason Dady BBQ staple is located off the bustling Broadway corridor with loads of outdoor, picnic-style seating that make it a great spot for groups. There’s a large outdoor playscape in the middle of it all and live music is a given on most weekends.
Menu Recommendations: Try the cherry glazed baby back ribs and order the mac and cheese for the kiddos (so you can steal a bite of that cheesy goodness, too!).

Babe’s Hamburgers

Location: 4535 Fredericksburg Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78201
Mom-Approved: Kids eat free all day, every day!
Menu Recommendations: Try the guacamole cheeseburger for a Tex-Mex take on a classic burger or delight in some house-made chicken strips with hand-battered onion rings.

BDaddy’s BBQ

Location: 14436 Bandera Rd, Helotes, TX 78023
Mom-Approved: Family-style servings and a large, welcoming outdoor patio for the kids to stretch their legs and move around.
Menu Recommendations: Don’t miss the sweet tea glazed rib and the jalapeno sausage; for the sandwich connoisseur, check out the brisket grilled cheese – kids love this one, too! And, leave room for a pour of local beer.

Big’z Burger Joint (1604/Bitters)

Location: 2303 N Loop 1604 W, San Antonio, TX 78258
Mom-Approved: With a massive artificial turf yard for your kids to run around, Big’z Burger Joint is perfect for large groups.  It has a Party Barn for private events and you can bring soccer balls, footballs, kickballs (heck, you get the idea) for your kids to play with.
Menu Recommendations: The burgers are delicious and come made to order with a variety of toppings like pineapple, coleslaw or beer-braised onions.

Blanco BBQ

Location: 13259 Blanco Rd., San Antonio, TX 78216
Mom-Approved: Blanco BBQ has good food, a kids’ menu, and a fabulous playscape and kids’ area outside. They have plenty of seating under the trees and can accommodate large parties. See ACMB’s blog post about Blanco BBQ here.
Menu Recommendations: The brisket is very moist and flavorful. As for sides, get the mac ‘n’ cheese, beans, and creamed corn.

BurgerFi

Mom-Approved: Kid menus; big, enclosed patio with a fun playscape; customizable burger options for adults and picky eaters.
Menu Recommendations: The original BurgerFi Burger is hard to beat; make it keto with the KetoFi. Vegetarian options are delicious, too – try the VegeFi. And, leave room for a classic custard cup for dessert!

Cheesy Jane’s

Location: 4200 Broadway St, San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: Classic and fun diner setting your kids are sure to love; kids menu options please even the pickiest of eaters. Shakes and malts make for a fun special occasion treat or weekend ice cream date!
Menu Recommendations: Try the “spicy splinters” to start; then choose from a variety of tasty sandwiches and burger options – the porky burger is a fan favorite. End your meal with an old-fashioned shake or malt – more than a dozen flavor options/combos to choose from!

Chris Madrid’s

Location: 830 W Hollywood, San Antonio, Texas 78212
Mom-Approved: Known for the best burgers in San Antonio, Chris Madrid’s is not only delicious but also family-friendly. You can take your kids, sit on the patio and stuff yourself silly with cheeseburgers and fries. Keep your kids entertained by playing “I Spy” with all of the San Antonio history and fun that hangs from the walls!
Menu recommendations: Keep it classic with the Cheddar Cheesy or Tostada Burger with hand-cut fries. Recently re-opened, though, new menu offerings are soon to be revealed, too!

Longhorn Cafe

Multiple Locations: 17625 Blanco Rd., San Antonio, TX 78232; 23775 W. IH-10, San Antonio, TX 78257; 3150 SE Military Dr., San Antonio, TX 78223; 1003 Rittiman Rd., San Antonio, TX 78218; 1667 Hwy. 46 (intersection of Loop 337), New Braunfels, TX 78132; 369 S. Esser Rd., Boerne, TX 78006
Mom-Approved: Each Longhorn Cafe is a little different, but most have great kids’ meals, video games, and patios with a playset. On certain nights, there’s even live music on the patio, not to mention cold beer for the parents and amazing food to boot! The Boerne location has a fenced-in play area with a big train in the middle and picnic tables.
Menu Recommendations: You just can’t beat a good greasy burger from Longhorn Cafe! The bean burger is a beef patty burger slathered in refried beans and cheese and topped with crunchy Fritos—seriously good.

Ruben’s Backyard

Location: 13838 Jones Maltsberger Rd (*MoMak’s Backyard Malts & Burgers’ former space).
Mom-Approved: A neighborhood spot for Tex-Mex and casual fare; located adjacent to McAlister Park, Ruben’s has a HUGE multi-level patio and loads of grass space/playscapes for the kids the runaround and burn some steam off before lunch or dinner time. Even in the hottest months, loads of trees on the property offer plenty of shade.
Menu Recommendations: Start with any variety of their tasty nachos – bean + cheese or rancheros.  For burger-lovers, try the poblano bacon. Tex-Mex dishes are plentiful, and their award-winning onion rings should always be on your order, too!.

Smoke Shack BBQ

Location: 3714 Broadway St, San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: Great BBQ plates and southern sandwiches with casual, counter service and loads of picnic table seating for groups of all sizes – a go-to for after youth sports and school events.
Menu Recommendations: Try the brisket grilled cheese, Big Dog, or Wagyu brisket with a side of vinegar slaw and spicy cream corn. Most plates are sharable for the littles, but they have a kid’s menu, too.

Two Bros BBQ Market

Location: 12656 West Ave, San Antonio, TX 78216
Mom-Approved: Just across from Walker Park, Two Brother’s has a large playscape and sandbox surrounded by picnic tables. This is our go-to when we have a large group of friends meeting for dinner.
Menu Recommendations: Keep it classic with Jason Dady’s beef brisket, or try something daring like the cherry glazed baby back ribs. Adults and kiddos both love the “Cheesy Chop.” And, order some grape Koolaid if you’re feeling nostalgic.

Two Step Restaurant & Cantina

Location: 9840 W Loop 1604 N, San Antonio, TX 78254
Mom-Approved: A family-friendly spot with a beautiful patio that hosts live music almost every weekend. Kids can explore the patio space, be a bit louder than normal, and enjoy the music. Also, they offer “sunset specials” daily from 4-7 p.m.
Menu Recommendations: Try the pickle spears tossed in Frito crunch. For entrée’s, the chicken fried steak is hard to beat, but their fried catfish is a close second. All their smoked meats are fantastic, too – try the BBQ plate if you can’t decide between the brisket and baby backs.

2PATIOS & PLAYSCAPES

Cerroni’s Purple Garlic

Location: 1017 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: Cerroni’s Purple Garlic’s sandbox lets kids dig and dig until their heart’s content. And bonus! Kids eat free on Wednesdays and Saturdays with the purchase of an adult meal. Just a warning, be sure to dump shoes out before climbing into your car or you could end up with sandcastles under the car seats!
Menu Recommendations: Start with the homemade garlic bread (add the extra cheese!); then, share a pizza or two with the table – the Sly Salone and Sausage Pesto are both crowd-pleasers. All desserts are house-made and great for sharing, too! 

Cured

Location: 306 Pearl Pkwy #101, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: Cured has fabulous adult food and a sneaky, off-the-menu kids menu with great house-made sodas. Sit outside on the patio for people watching and pretty regular live music offerings on the Pearl lawn.
Menu Recommendations: Share a signature charcuterie platter – you can build your own or ask for chef’s recommendations. The beet, avocado, and citrus salad is great for a warm day and the beer can mussels are always tasty, too. 

Down on Grayson

Location: 303 E Grayson St, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: A family-friendly space with a gorgeous, spacious patio that overlooks the Pearl. The menu has a little bit of everything, sure to please your pickiest eaters. Bring your dogs, bring your kids – the more the merrier to share a big picnic table with.
Menu Recommendations: Go for the double-dip – guacamole and pimento cheese – or the shishito peppers to start. For entrées, try the fish tacos or chimichurri strip. All of their sandwiches are great for sharing, too.

El Chaparral

Location: 15103 Bandera Rd., Helotes, TX 78023
Mom-Approved: A view, a patio, and a playground—done!
Menu Recommendations: Go for the fajitas or the stuffed poblano pepper with queso.

La Cabana

Location: 170 Buffalo Place, Cibolo, TX 78108
Mom-Approved: A fenced-in patio with a play area allows diners to grab a table outside and eat a nice meal with friends while the kids play. On the weekends, they sometimes have a band playing and always have mariachis.
Menu Recommendations: Get enchiladas verdes or a burger. Their tortilla soup is also good.

La Gloria

Multiple locations: 100 E. Grayson St., San Antonio, TX 78215; Dominion – 21819 I-10, San Antonio, TX 78257
Mom-Approved: On a nice day or evening, La Gloria is the perfect spot for al fresco dining. Set along the San Antonio River, kids can play in the grass, watch the ducks, and take a stroll along the San Antonio River after dinner. At the Dominion, a spacious, welcoming outdoor patio space is great for kids and big family events.
Menu Recommendations: Go for the ceviche or cochinita pibil plate.

La Hacienda Los Barrios

Location: 18747 Redland Rd., San Antonio, TX 78259
Mom-Approved: A HUGE patio, live music, and a playground make this Barrios Family restaurant a plus.
Menu Recommendations: Order the puffy tacos. You won’t regret it!

Mama’s in Boerne

Location: 30775 IH-10 West, Boerne, TX 78006
Mom-Approved: Mama’s has an arcade area inside, a playscape, and a field/basketball area outside—great to keep kids of all ages entertained!
Menu Recommendations: Order the chicken fried steak and fried okra—you won’t be sorry!

Mariscos El Paisa Sabor a Mexico

Location: 3110 S Zarzamora St, San Antonio, Texas 78225
Mom-Approved: Fresh seafood and ceviche paired with a gigantic ship-themed playground for the kiddos; loads of outdoor seating and a generous kids menu.
Menu Recommendations: You can’t go wrong with any of Maricos’ fresh ceviche tostadas or “coctels.”

Mi Casa Tamales (Boerne)

Location: 25930 Interstate 10 Frontage Rd, Boerne, TX 78006
Mom-Approved: Mi Casa Tamales is the place for great drinks, good Mexican food, a fun patio, and live music. The restaurant backs up to the showroom for Rainbow Play Yards so kids can go wild on their choice of playscape – talk about a kid’s dream!  They also have a sports court and private party room so keep it in mind for a casual family gathering or birthday party.
Menu Recommendations: All the tamales – 15 flavors to be exact. All tamales are made gluten-free with fresh, natural ingredients, and you can dine in or order out.

Shuck Shack

Location: 520 E Grayson St, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: Great variety of chicken and seafood options in a casual, outdoor setting that’s great for when the temperatures drop a bit. The patio enclosed outdoor space is safe, filled with long picnic tables, and complete with a generous playscape for the kiddos. There’s plenty of ambiance lighting for evening dining, too.
Menu Recommendations: Check out their hot fried chicken and oyster bar; the lobster roll is also a fan-favorite. Their happy hour has loads of specials, too.

Taco Palenque

Location: 1002 NE Interstate 410 Loop, San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: Authentic (and delicious!) Mexican food in a casual, counter-service setting with a great outdoor playground and covered patio;  this location also has a drive-thru option and is open 24/7 – for early and late-night munchies.
Menu Recommendations: Every single salsa from the self-serve salsa bar is perfection – seriously. Pair that with complimentary chips or pile on top of their famous “panchitos” for loads of flavor. Parilladas are great for sharing. For non-sharers, grab the “pirata” taco – beans, cheese, and fajita all wrapped into a homemade tortilla.

The Good Kind – Southtown

Location: 1127 S St Mary’s St, San Antonio, TX 78210
Mom-Approved: Fresh and local healthy food and fun cocktails; The Good Kind offers a huge outdoor space – perfect for letting the kids stretch their legs – and a great atmosphere.
Menu Recommendations: Mix and match grains and proteins to create your own bowl; or, pair a salad with a panini. Kids love the grilled cheese and house-made lemonade. Don’t forget to add a smoothie or fresh cold-pressed juice to your order.

The Patio Southtown

Location: 1035 S Presa St, San Antonio, TX 78210
Mom-Approved: Outdoor patio with playscapes and kid-friendly spaces; TVs indoor and outdoors; casual and inviting vibe with really tasty burgers and fries and a full kids menu.
Menu Recommendations: Go for the fried cheese bites or fried peppers to start. The Southtown burger and chopped brisket sandwiches are great for entrees. Or, keep it light with a tasty spinach strawberry salad.

Tycoon Flats

Location: 2926 N. St. Mary’s St., San Antonio, TX 78212
Mom-Approved: Most weekends, Tycoon Flats has live music. They offer an outdoor eating area with a kids’ play area and good food.
Menu Recommendations: Great burgers that you can add just about anything to, and the nachos are amazing. The fried pickles are also delish!

Viola’s Ventanas

Location: 9660 Westover Hills Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78251
Mom-Approved: Enjoy a family meal on Viola’s gigantic patio with plenty of shade; the menu has plenty of your Mexican food favorites and some wild cards, too. A great place to enjoy a margarita or celebrate any special occasion in a casual setting.
Menu Recommendations: Go for the classic enchilada assortment, cabrito en salsa entrée, or the plato de los Barrios (for a little bit of everything!).

1FOOD HALLS, BEER GARDENS, & FOOD TRUCK PARKS 

Bottling Department at Pearl

Location: 312 Pearl Parkway, Building 6, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: Six unique food, dessert, and beverage vendors all under one roof – talk about convenience! Kids love the variety and the option to eat in a casual setting both in and outdoors!
Menu Recommendations: Try Bud’s for southern rotisserie dishes; Tenko for ramen specials; Fletcher’s for good ol’ hamburgers and fries; and, Maybelle’s for a sweet donut or two.

Burleson Yard Beer Garden

Location: 430 Austin St, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: Located adjacent to the Hays Street Bridge, this beer garden has loads of outdoor space with picnic tables, a playscape, hammocks, play cars, and a small herb garden for kids to explore. Food trucks are on site and non-alcoholic beverages are on tap.
Menu Recommendations: Try a local or Texas beer on tap; food trucks rotate regularly – think nachos, pizza, and other bar foods.

Freetail Brew. Co.

Location:  4035 N. Loop 1604 #105, San Antonio, Texas 78257
Mom-Approved: Grab a local brew while the kids enjoy any of their Brewpub’s eight different pizza options. Open, inviting spaces are great for large groups.
Menu Recommendations: Try any of the Brewpub’s eight pizza offerings – all pair well with their local brews on tap.

Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery

Location: 136 E Grayson St #120, San Antonio, TX 78215
Mom-Approved: Savory comfort food in the heart of the historic Pearl property; a lively patio is great for early evening gatherings. Bonus: kids are given fresh dough to form and bake their own pretzel for an appetizer – so fun!
Menu Recommendations: Go for the deviled eggs, pimento cheese, or famous fried snapper throats to start. For entrees, consider raw bar and boil options.

StreetFare SA

Location: 1916 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218
Mom-Approved: The newest food truck park on the block, StreetFare gives families variety in food trucks, beer offerings, and on-site activities – think full-size playset, horseshoe pits, doggie park, and other lawn games.
Menu Recommendations: Food trucks rotate on a very regular basis – you can typically always grab a burger, tacos, nachos, and smokin’ BBQ plates.

The Pig Pen

Location: 106 Pershing Ave, San Antonio, TX 78209
Mom-Approved: A neighborhood bar with an on-site food truck that offers a casual, inviting setting – indoor and outdoor picnic table seating. Live music is always on rotation inside; kids can run and play outside with a full playscape. Brunch is now served on Sundays, too!
Menu Recommendations: For the grown-ups, the smoked wings, brisket grilled cheese, and chopped salad with shrimp re a must! For kids, traditional grilled cheese and chicken tenders are tasty. Grab a basket of perfectly fried onion rings to share.

The Point Park & Eats

Location: 24188 Boerne Stage Rd., San Antonio, TX 78255
Mom-Approved: The Point Park & Eats has outdoor play areas, a rotating schedule of food trucks, and great music and bars for the adults. See ACMB’s blog post about The Point Park & Eats here.
Menu Recommendations: With a constantly changing schedule of food trucks, there’s always a huge selection to choose from.
