Flower Power: A Fun Evening Learning Something New

Over Spring Break, my teacher friend Angel and I talked about getting together to catch up – it had been too long since the last time we’d just been able to hang out! We thought about a restaurant, or getting drinks… we tossed around the idea of a follow directions painting place and then Angel suggested we take a flower arranging class at Statue of Design. It was the most fun I’ve had in AGES and I couldn’t wait to share it with you! David and his team were fantastic hosts – we started with some bites to eat and festive drinks and a party game to warm everyone up.

Each station is set up with a box of florist’s supplies and some basic materials. We made a spring arrangement that included that beautiful hyacinth. The materials are yours to use and the flowers are yours to take home!

David started the class by showing us two arrangements that he might make for a wedding or retail client. Watching the start to finish process was really cool. He “thought out loud” and explained why and how he was doing each step.

Those flowering branches are holding test tubes with the orange flowers! Because the branches will outlast the flowers, you can just change out the flowers and continue to use the arrangement!

We started by collecting some of our other blooms – each arrangement had a dozen roses in it! David sprinkled in “flower” facts and tips of the industry throughout the class – like how to look for healthy roses and what different rose terms actually meant.

I felt fancy when I got to use the rose stripper! It takes the leave and thorns off in one fell swoop!

Step by step we built our arrangements (and talked and laughed…).

Will (and Ramon who isn’t pictured) moved around to all of the stations helping when needed, offering advice and troubleshooting (like what to do if your rose head falls off, for example).

David does an excellent job of explaining the process he’s going through and how to get it looking “florist awesome”. Several times I wandered over to his station just to be sure I was doing it right!

I couldn’t believe that we actually MADE those arrangements!

The very best part of the night (other than seeing my friend!) was that not one single arrangement was duplicated! We each took home a completely different work of art. It’s still on my kitchen table more than a week later!

The final flower tally: 15 tulips, 12 roses, 9 stems of hyacinth and three giant green orchids.
