Fallish has finally arrived in south Texas – and what a treat it is! The kids are back to school, a cool breeze blows through… every few days, the coffee is a little sweeter, and the weekends are a little faster. One of my favorite things to do this time of year is to slip away with my husband for a couples retreat. The kids can handle a night or two at the grandparents – it’s time to disconnect from the world and reconnect with your loved one. We are truly blessed to live in a very central area of Texas, which offers plenty of options just a few hours drive away from home. The Hill Country that surrounds San Antonio offers a wide variety of lodging options and experiences, but there are also some great cities within a few hours that are worth exploring, too. So, whatever kind of adventure you’re looking for, something is bound to fit your ideal weekend getaway.

Think, being at one with nature, but with luxury and amenities. Glamping is the perfect way to disconnect just enough to feel peaceful, but connected enough to check on the kids a few times. Camping
The nights are getting a lot cooler and the stars just seem a little brighter this time of year. It is the perfect time to explore the outdoors on a weekend getaway with the one you love. I am not exactly a tent gal… but many of my friends are. Here is a list of a few of their favorite spots to camp around Texas. Another option for those who don’t or won’t sleep under canvas is to rent an RV. Who knew this was a thing!? Turns out there are several websites that offer RV rentals from owners looking to rent out their rigs. Depending on the rental, some owners come and set up and take down for you, offer different delivery options to your campsite, and a range of other add-ons to ensure your outdoor retreat is a smooth one. Campgrounds tend to be cheaper than hotels, home shares, and resorts, so if you’re looking to spend less on lodging and more on experiences – try camping on for size!

Once you determine a location or lodging option, think about some memory-making experiences you and your significant other might want to embark on. Within just a few hours drive of San Antonio, we have access to lakes, rivers, or beaches that are perfect for water adventures. For a stiff drink or two check out the wineries, craft breweries, and distilleries of the hill country region. It’s also Oktoberfest season (Prost!) and many towns around San Antonio have festivals full of German goodies to try.
I am a firm believer that every Texan should make a pilgrimage to the Texas State Fair at least once in their life. There is so much to offer at the fair, from food to football! The fall also brings out the perfect weather for the Renaissance Fair, which offers a really unique experience to retreat into another world of fun. Stick with me for my last suggestion because it’s so fun and unique that I just have to share it with you. There is a ranch in Wimberly that was built and started by tattoo artist Dillon Forte, offering both lodging and incredible ink. Talk about a weekend getaway to remember!

Y’all. How lucky are we that Galveston is just 2 hours and 45 minutes from San Antonio? Galveston has historically always been a port city and it’s lucky for us that also includes cruise ship terminals! There are plenty of destination options within 4, 5, and 7 days of sailing. Most destinations on the Galveston cruise interties offer ports in Mexico and the Western Caribbean. Each cruise ship offers various activities, so you are sure to find something that fits your vacation style as a couple.
Loyalty Points
Don’t forget about your points! There are so many different airlines, hotel chains, and credit cards issuing points for money you are already spending to use toward various getaway options. Check out your frequently visited hotel chains and airline websites and see if you have accrued points toward a discount on a fall couples retreat.
This beautiful region of the world has some truly spectacular places close by.
