Spiraling Curriculum with BASIS Charter Schools

Alamo City Moms Blog is partnering with BASIS Charter Schools to share more about their curriculum with our readers. They are hosting Open House dates in October and November at their three area campuses. Open Enrollment begins October 25, 2018! This is a sponsored post.

BASIS Curriculum’s Unique Spirals

The BASIS Curriculum is presented through a spiraling curriculum, which approaches learning through a natural progression of increasingly complex ideas. Implementing a spiraling curriculum as early as possible sets up students for deep comprehension and will benefit them throughout their academic career.

The Snowball Effect

BASIS Charter Schools students master concepts through multiple encounters with material that is simplified for the audience, based on their readiness. Prior knowledge and personal experience greatly affect a student’s readiness. A spiraling curriculum meets students where they are and allows them to master concepts easily by presenting it through naturally incremental steps. When students learn content in this way, they are ready for deeper exploration each time a concept or content is impressed.

The initial introduction to a lesson is intended simply to acquaint students with new material in an elemental and non-threatening way. The next time students encounter the material, they should be able to recall that simple introduction and be ready to absorb a little more. Content is often revisited many times, each time sparking recall of the previous visit and exploring the lesson in greater depth and scope.

The BASIS Curriculum consciously applies this method not only to academic learning, but also behavioral learning. This method is effective for accruing success skills such as collaborative learning, organization, critical thinking, and time management as well.

The Sooner, the Better

At the age that children enter school, typically they are well-accustomed to learning at a rapid rate. From birth, they are learning extremely complex skills, such as language acquisition—decoding, establishing, and building a lexicon of language—a little at a time. They learn by touching, tasting, trying, testing, practicing, and processing new ideas and experiences every day, absorbing at their own rate, building knowledge and skill by touching on concepts again and again, until connections and patterns develop.

This method of teaching is effective because the learner builds both knowledge and confidence by mastering new material gradually, through carefully and thoughtfully portioned chunks. As comprehension grows, confidence in their own ability to learn increasingly complex material further opens their minds to soak up even more.

Spiraling Content Cultivates Academic Success

By middle school, BASIS Charter Schools students are ready to take on material usually introduced in high school. And by high school, students are revisiting familiar concepts in AP classes and Capstone classes that are more like college courses than traditional high school courses.

By applying a spiraling curriculum consistently from the beginning, BASIS Charter Schools students have an advantage. Through this method, they are capable of great learning while engaged in a rigorous, accelerated curriculum.
