Summer is here, and it is time for travel!
One of the most popular questions I see popping up in mom groups online is about traveling with a toddler. The confined space, the potential for meltdowns, and the challenge of keeping your little one entertained for hours might seem overwhelming. However, I can assure you that that it IS doable! We travel each summer to Greece to visit family, and I have now made this exhausting trip with 1, 2, and now 3 children. Admittedly, the toddler phase is the toughest — but I am here to share all my tips and tricks with you, to make sure you have the easiest time possible in the air.
1. Plan Ahead
Book strategically: Choose flights that coincide with your toddler’s nap times, or — if at all possible — opt for overnight flights. Obviously, direct flights are preferable because they avoid the hassle (and potential delays) of layovers. However, it can be difficult to find these options. The flight may ultimately prove more expensive at nap times, but I promise, it is worth it!
Check airline policies: Familiarize yourself with your airline’s policies on traveling with children, including baggage allowances for strollers and car seats. We recently learned that collapsable wagons are NOT permitted by most airlines, which was a huge bummer for us.
2. Pack Smart
Diaper bag essentials: Ensure your diaper bag is well-stocked with diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, snacks, and any necessary medications. Chances are, you are going to need that extra change of clothes! I always bring pajamas for overnight flights too, because they help little ones get into the bedtime mindset.
Comfort items: Bring along your child’s favorite blanket or stuffed animal to provide comfort and familiarity. We also love these inflatable airline footrests that turn the seat into a bed for kids — but again, check your airline policy. Another member of the ACM team had one in her Amazon cart before travelling to the UK, thought to check with the airline (United) and found that they were prohibited on all flights.
3. Entertainment Essentials
Keeping a toddler entertained on a flight is crucial! Here are a few of my favorite toys and crafts to fill the time:
1. Melissa & Doug Water Wow! Activity Pads: These reusable coloring books are mess-free and only require water to reveal colorful images. They are perfect for toddlers who love to color, without the risk of crayons or markers staining anything or drying out (this can, and does, happen in pressurized cabins).
2. Crayola Color Wonder Markers and Pads: Another mess-free option, these markers only work on special Color Wonder paper, keeping your toddler engaged without any risk of marks on airplane seats or walls.
3. Dot Sticker Books: Simple yet endlessly entertaining, sticker books can keep a toddler occupied for a considerable amount of time. Look for themed sticker books that match your child’s interests.
4. Paint by Sticker Books: These keep my kids engaged for 30+ minutes at a time. I was surprised that my 3 year old was able to do them fairly well, and they are great for fine motor and visual processing skills.
5. Magnetic Travel Games: Compact and easy to handle, magnetic travel games like Tic-Tac-Toe or a magnetic drawing board can be both entertaining and educational.
6. Wikki Stix: Another surprising activity for me! These were a huge hit with my girls, and they can be used multiple times. Inexpensive, lightweight, and very engaging.
In general, it is best to avoid crafts with lots of pieces, small items, or things that would be too large for the airplane tray. Playdough or clay is always an easy one, too (and most of us have this in our homes already).
4. Snacks and Meals
All the snacks: Pack a variety of healthy snacks like fruit slices, cheese sticks, and crackers. While it makes sense to avoid sugary snacks that can lead to energy spikes and crashes, I will say that I am honestly not above a bribe when we are in a confined space. I recommend taking both, and bringing out the good stuff when needed! Find a list of travel snack ideas — including containers, tips, tricks and more — here.
Hydration: Make sure your cups are spill proof — and I mean TRULY spill proof. The last thing you need is a soaked backup outfit. Taking sips of liquid during takeoff and landing can also help little ears cope with building air pressure.
5. Managing Meltdowns
Stay calm: Your toddler will take their cues from you, so staying calm and composed can help them feel secure and safe.
Distraction techniques: Use distractions like a favorite toy, snack, or even a new, exciting game on a tablet to redirect their attention away from the impending tantrum. Tablets are also unlimited when we are travelling. Screen time rules can fly right out of that airplane window for all I care. If my girls want to watch 4 hours of movies, they can go for it! Everything ends, and coping strategies on board an airplane are a must.
Movement breaks: If it’s safe and possible, take a walk up and down the aisle to help your toddler burn off some energy.
Conclusion
Flying with a toddler doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. By planning ahead, packing strategically, and bringing along the right toys and activities, you can make the journey enjoyable for both you and your little one. Remember, the journey is part of the adventure, and with these tips, you’re well on your way to creating wonderful travel memories with your toddler. Happy flying!
