New and Exciting Things Coming to San Antonio in 2021

Oh what a year! As the world moves ahead from 2020, everybody is looking forward to what 2021 has in store for us, including many new and exciting things in San Antonio. Have a look at some of the new shops, attractions, restaurants, schools, and more coming to our city in 2021. 

New San Antonio Food 

Brand new Jolibee is already making a lot of buzz on the Northwest Side. Fans of the Philippines-based fast food chain reportedly waited hours in line during opening weekend, and they said it was totally worth it.

The Jerk Shack, named San Antonio’s Best Caribbean Restaurant in 2020, will open a second location on the far West Side this summer.  

Local favorite El Mirasol closed its original Blanco Rd. restaurant and opened a new location on N Loop 1604 in the Stone Oak area. 

Burger Boy is growing! The local fast-food chain will open its fourth location this spring, on the city’s North Side near Bitters Rd. and U.S. Hwy. 281. Plus, they just announced plans for a fifth location on the Southeast Side!

The founders of La Panadería announced a new Mexican Restaurant. El Morita Kitchen will be coming to Quarry Village this summer. Can’t wait!

I Heart Mac and Cheese is coming to San Antonio. This cheese lovers’ dream is planning on coming to the North West area late 2021. 

Austin-based chain P. Terry’s said it will open two new locations in San Antonio, in Medical Center and the North Side, expected to open late 2021. 

More exciting things coming to the River Walk. Vietnamese restaurant House of Má and tiki bar Hugman’s Oasis are set to open at the Historic Witte Building later this year. 

Lots of people are excited about Bar Loretta, which is expected to open in the heart of King William Historic District in February. 

H-E-B just released a limited-edition Creamy Creations Spurs Sherbet, featuring our beloved Coyote and a fiesta color-themed combination of strawberry, orange, and blue raspberry. Get it while supplies last!

Speaking of Spurs, participating local Taco Bells will be giving away free tacos on Tuesdays and Thursdays game days for the remaining of the season. Spurs fans can get two free crunchy tacos with the purchase of a large drink. Go Spurs Go!

New San Antonio Hotels

Thompson Hotel is set to open on February 18, 2021. The newest luxury hotel in San Antonio is located on the River Walk just steps away from the Tobin Center. It will be home to two restaurants, Landrace and The Moon’s Daughter, by renowned San Antonio chefs. 

Renovations are undergoing at the once Hilton Doubletree by the airport, which will become the Estancia del Norte is coming this spring. 

Upcoming San Antonio Events

San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo might look a little different this year, although there are limited tickets and the carnival is cancelled, there’s still lots to see and do at the Rodeo at the Freeman Coliseum from February 11-18.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is bringing Dinosaur Drive-Thru from January 28-February 21! Dino-fans don’t want to miss this COVID-safe experience with over 60 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs.

Monster Jam will be back in San Antonio this summer at the Alamodome. 

San Antonio Symphony is resuming its 2020-2021 season in February. The performances will be held at The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and will have streaming options. 

If you didn’t get a chance to see the Holiday Lights on the River Walk this past holiday season, there’s good news for you! The famous holiday lights display has been extended until February 14, 2021. Don’t miss it! 

The Magik Theatre will continue to stream their production of Dragon Loves Tacos until the end of March. 

Entertainment Coming to San Antonio

Texas-based Kung Fu Saloon will open its first San Antonio location on the Northwest Side. Expect yummy food and vintage arcade games in the Rim Crossing Entertainment District this summer. 

San Antonio’s North Side will get a brand new camping themed outdoor venue. Camp 1604 beer garden is coming to The Rim area summer of 2021. 

EVO Cinemas is bringing a new movie theater, gaming, and dining venue to the Far West Side near Hwy. 151. Coming in 2021!

Museum Exhibits in San Antonio

The DoSeum will host the exhibition Beautiful Minds: Dyslexia and the Creative Advantage until March 28. 

Limitless! Five Women Reshape Contemporary Art at The McNay Art Museum.

America’s Impressionism: Echoes of a Revolution, No Ocean Between Us, and Roman Landscapes at the San Antonio Museum of Art. 

Construction & New Developments in San Antonio

U.S. Hwy. 281 N expansion project is advancing quickly. Phase 1 is almost ready and set to open this year. 

The Mitchell Chang Foundation is bringing the first public inclusive playground to San Antonio’s Park System. Mitchell’s Landing is scheduled to open in Fall of 2021 at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park in the Stone Oak area. 

A new dog park is coming to Maverick Park (located less than a mile south of Pearl) this spring. 

Construction is approved to start this summer for a 32-story apartment tower in San Antonio’s business district. Expected completion date is 2024. 

This year, Hemisfair Park will being construction of a new garden along East Nueva Street.

New Braunfels is getting a brand new H-E-B near I-35, expected to be completed by the end of 2021. 

The Pearl is bringing a new park, four new restaurants, and new parking spaces this year!

Amazon is planning on opening two fulfillment centers and a delivery station in our city, set to launch in 2021 and 2022.

New San Antonio Attractions

Morgan’s Wonderland just announced they will re-open on March 5th after being closed for a year because of the pandemic. Morgan’s Wonderland Sports complex will open the next day, and a splash park at Morgan’s Inspiration Island is scheduled to open in May.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas will debut its newest ride Dare Devil Dive Flying Machines late February. 

Sea Life Aquarium located next to Legoland Discovery Center in the Rivercenter Mall is coming soon. We don’t have an opening date yet but hoping that it’s sometime in 2021!

Sea World San Antonio says something big is coming in 2021. We’ve seen teasers with #RideTheTide so we’re expecting something exciting.

New Schools in San Antonio

Two new schools are coming to San Antonio’s Southside in August: Royal Public Schools, a K-12 charter school network, and Prelude Preparatory Public School.

San Antonio’s Northside ISD is expanding. Kallison Ranch Area Middle School is expected to open in fall of 2021, and Galm Road Area High School in 2022.
