This school year faces some challenges for many of us. My first grader is in a dual-language program and I realize and value the fact that many American families have decided to put their kids in similar programs. We all recognize the importance of learning a language at an early age, but I can’t imagine how hard it must be for those who don’t speak any Spanish to help their kids with assignments.
During the first few days of distance learning, the teacher asked the kids to put in a Ziplock bag two objects that start with their initials for ‘Show & Tell’. My son’s name is Jose, so we ended up putting a small toy -juguete- and a juice box -jugo-.
I’m sure ‘Show & Tell’ will continue through the year for school-age kids, as well as preschool kids in bilingual programs. We recognize that finding small and appropriate objects for show and tell isn’t always easy, neither for those of us who speak Spanish nor for those who don’t.
