Mural hunting in San Antonio won’t leave you disappointed – the city is full of public art and iconic murals. So if you want to find some of the best murals in San Antonio, you clicked on the right link! I’ve compiled a list of some of the most incredible murals this city offers, and created a detailed map with their locations. Alright, let’s get started!
The Most Instagrammable Mural: The Artisan
Along the side of The Artisan on South Presa Street, this beautiful otomi wall was painted by @myth.bna. The vibrant colors and size of the mural make it perfect for instagram. And after your photoshoot, check out the unique and authentic items sold inside! This otomi wall is number one on the murals map.
Murals for Selena Fans
A post about San Antonio murals would not be complete without mentioning the Selena Murals. Alan Calvo’s bright and vibrant mural is located on the back of the Alamo Candy building (pictured below on the left). If you continue walking around the building, more murals are waiting to be discovered! And you’ll find another Selena mural on the wall of a shopping center on South Flores Street and Beatrice Ave, by the Artist Christopher Montoya. These murals are number two and three on the murals map, respectively.
St Mary’s Strip
If you want to visit several amazing murals all at once, walking around the St. Mary’s Strip would be the place to do it. The murals below correspond with the following numbers on the Murals Map: Shiner Bock (number four), George Strait (number five), Greetings from San Antonio (number six), Beastie Boys (number seven), Breakfast Tacos (number eight), and Lotería Cards (number nine).
St Mary’s is also home to two of The Fiesta Murals (number ten and eleven on the murals map).
The Westside
Murals on the Westside are not only gorgeous, but display the way of life and history of the area. My favorite was the “Bienvenidos al Westside” – this mural (number twelve on the murals map) celebrates the beautiful culture of the Westside and spans five walls along Guadalupe Street. The Westside truly provides a treasure trove of iconic murals, and you can read more about their history here.
While you are exploring The Westside, you need to check out the “World’s Largest Virgin Mary Mosaic,” a true show stopper. It is located at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, number thirteen on the map.
South Flores St.
Like the St. Mary’s Strip, exploring South Flores St. will provide you with many opportunities for stumbling upon a fantastic mural. Start at the Gravelmouth Gallery to check out the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Mural (I had the pleasure of photographing this one AS it was painted by Nik Soupè) and the “Tacotonio” mural, located on the back of the building. Not too far down the street, you will find the iconic “Opt for Optimism” mural at 1802 S. Flores Street. These murals are numbers fourteen and fifteen on the map.
For the Spurs Fans
Spurs fans can find their fair share of murals in San Antonio. At St. Mary’s Street and Pereida Street, you’ll spot an amazing Spurs mural by @trebla_art, pictured below, and number sixteen on the murals map. A mural dedicated to the Spurs’ Coyote is located across the street from the AT&T Center on one of the walls of Best Tickets (926 AT&T Center Parkway). And any true Spurs fan will be up for a visit to Franky Diablo’s a 1301 Roosevelt Ave, San Antonio, TX 78210) to see their walls dedicated to the Spurs.
Essex Modern City – One Stop Shop for Amazing Murals
You may want to check their hours before visiting, but Essex Modern City (number seventeen on the murals map) is the ultimate gallery of murals. With a view of downtown, picnic tables, and gorgeous art, they have created the perfect spot to spend time outside. Follow their Facebook page so you know when they are hosting various fun events!
