Girls’ Night Out in San Antonio: Downtown Edition

Parenting is hard, and eventually I need adult beverages with other ladies to save my sanity. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, though, meeting at the same place or doing the same things every time. When the opportunity for “me time” arises, I bolt out the door giving little thought to doing something different. And then the question came: when was the last time you went bar hopping? Without someone’s birthday, wedding or divorce being involved? For me, it’s been awhile, which makes it easy to feel out of touch and unsure of where to go. Never fear!

I unselfishly dedicated my child-free weekend to having a good time with a friend in the name of blog content. OK, full disclosure? I would’ve done it anyway, but now you can go too. This fun and casual night out in and around downtown San Antonio is walkable at approximately two miles total—just wear the right shoes!

Rideshare and/or walking tour begins at:

The Cherrity Bar (302 Montana St., San Antonio, TX 78203 | (210) 559-0421)—Great vibes for a great cause: this lively spot donates 100% of profits to charities selected by patrons. Grab a drink to get a wooden token and vote for your favorite charity featured that month. This spot includes a deck, fun drinks, and live music. It also includes a game room and is family friendly (if you decide to bring the family next time).

Head north on Cherry to E. Commerce, following E. Commerce (an approximately one-mile walk) to:

The Esquire Tavern (155 E. Commerce St., San Antonio, TX 78205 | (210) 222-2521)—Boasting the longest wooden bar in Texas, Esquire has a vintage feel and delicious food. Grab a snack in addition to drinks—I highly recommend the Big Red Empanada or the Frito Pie. #purosa

Backtrack on E. Commerce (an approximately 0.2-mile walk) to N. Presa:

The Davenport Lounge (203 N. Presa St., San Antonio, TX 78205 | (210) 224-5635)—Eclectic mix of old and new, featuring live music every night, specialty martinis, and signature cocktails. The French 75 is delicious, if you’re feeling fancy and want some champagne.

From N. Presa, follow Market St. to S. Alamo, travel down S. Alamo (an approximately 0.5-mile walk) to:

Bar America (723 S. Alamo St., San Antonio, TX 78205 | (210)  223-1285)—A retro jukebox, electronic darts, and a no-frills vibe round out your night. The selection of local beers and regional spirits are impressive; however, I was most impressed with being carded by the bouncer—at least until my friend mentioned he was carding everyone. Bummer. Excellent bar food if you’re looking for snacks.

Still early and don’t want the night to end? Continue down S. Alamo (an approximately 0.1-mile walk) to:

Rosario’s Mexican Restaurant (910 S. Alamo St., San Antonio, TX 78205 | (210) 223-1806)—This Southtown San Antonio staple serves late-night bites and is open until midnight on Saturdays. And they have drinks, too!

The area in and around downtown has many fun bars and restaurants. This itinerary is definitely not all-inclusive, and another location may catch your eye. Remember that sometimes the best adventures in life are unplanned, especially when good friends are involved. Enjoy your night out!
