Bakery Lorraine (Three main locations: The Rim—17503 La Cantera Pkwy., San Antonio, TX 78257; (210) 415-4066 | The Pearl—306 Pearl Pkwy., Suite 110, San Antonio, TX 78215; (210) 862-5582 | Medical Center—7338 Louis Pasteur Dr., Suite 201, San Antonio, TX 78229; (210) 303-0330. A fourth location also exists inside The DoSeum, although you won’t find a full selection there; and a fifth location can be found in Austin.)

Yes, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Bakery Lorraine, ending each with a fantastic pastry or macaron from the bakery with a cult following. Once you peek into the display case, you’ll understand why people are addicted to their housemade pop tarts or any tart that comes from its talented kitchen. Whether it’s almond croissants or Earl Gray macarons, each flavor is fresh, unique, and fun. You can pick and choose a box of macarons to share, but be warned:  first, it’s almost impossible to decide what flavors to choose; and second, it’s pretty darn hard to share.

Chocollazo (4013 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78209 | (210) 776-3963)

A local flavor spot that offers chocolates as delicious as they are gorgeous, Chocollazo is a great source for surprising treats, like a potato chip chocolate bar or a chocolate-covered bacon bouquet. They even have a selection they’ll deliver locally. Honey or caramel truffles, candy sushi (on my list to surprise my sushi-loving kiddo), and so much more, including crepes to enjoy on Saturdays, Chocozallo’s treats are almost too pretty to eat. Note: I said almost. After all, once you’ve put it on IG, it’s your duty to enjoy the chocolate, right?! By the way, Chocollazo is one of two chocolate spots in San Antonio that has enjoyed the national spotlight. It was featured on the Cooking Channel’s Eat St. Enjoy the Broadway location for now, and know that in the near future, you can enjoy Chocozallo at Hemisfair, giving moms an energy boost for those afternoons at Yanaguana Park.

Choicolate Artisan Chocolates (Two locations: Stone Oak—700 E. Sonterra Blvd., Suite 210, San Antonio, TX 78258; (210) 495-2464 | Downtown—204 Alamo Plaza, Suite J, San Antonio, TX 78215; (210) 952-9166)

Beautifully handmade artisan chocolates in more than 20 unique flavors from all-natural ingredients are made on-site at two San Antonio Choicolate locations, Stone Oak and just off of Alamo Plaza near the Menger Hotel. Gourmet truffles, toffee, vegan chocolate, and sugar-free chocolate is available, all made with premium European chocolate. You can even order online. (Hello, locally made chocolates on Amazon?? Yes, please!) Truffle flavors include red velvet, margarita, vanilla chai, and chocolate mint—and yes, I’m drooling as I type this. They even offer tasty parties and chocolate-making classes, which sounds like a terrific girls’ night out.

Délice Chocolatier and Patisserie (946 N. Loop 1604 W., Canyon Creek Suite 145, San Antonio, TX 78232; (210) 545-2200)

Ooh la la! A touch of Paris courtesy of Le Cordon Blue and a bit of reality TV fame thanks to The Food Network, and you have a local shop sharing the talents and flavors of a husband and wife team. Together they turn out amazing cakes, and yes, each of them has appeared on The Food Network, with husband Nacho Aguirre claiming the 2018 Spring Baking Championship. Order a custom cake or stop by to take home an array of Belgian chocolates or specialty sweets like chocolate salami (a combination of chocolate, dried fruits, and nuts), or chocolate-covered orange peel. Trust me, you can’t go wrong and you won’t walk out empty-handed.

Ghiradelli Chocolate Company (Shops at Rivercenter, 849 E. Commerce St., Suite 125, San Antonio, TX 78205; (210) 627-6064)

An array of pre-packaged goodies at Ghiradelli.

The shop offers a full array of world-famous Ghiradelli treats, including Ghiradelli chocolate bars in every flavor and a unique assortment of bulk snacks including chocolate-covered cashews and almonds. You can enjoy a hot fudge sundae, topped with handmade hot fudge made from rich Ghirardelli chocolate, real ice cream shakes, traditional malts, and hot cocoas, which you can pair with irresistible chocolate chip cookies, decadent brownies, and fresh-dipped strawberries.

Beautiful boxes waiting to be filled with tasty Godiva chocolates.

Godiva Chocolatier (Two locations: The Shops at La Cantera—15900 La Cantera Pkwy., San Antonio, TX 78256; (210) 877-0168 | North Star Mall—406 North Star Mall, San Antonio, TX 78216; (210) 342-4001)

Another chocolate that needs no introduction, Godiva is the ultimate indulgence for chocolate lovers. With a selection of signature truffles, an array of chocolates, and of course, chocolate-covered strawberries, Godiva makes everyone’s heart beat a little faster. Their new cupcake-inspired chocolates are amazing, and everything can be ordered online, but ogling the options in person is so much more fun.

IT’Sugar (Rivercenter Mall—849 E. Commerce St., San Antonio, TX 78205; (210) 245-6066 | Additional seasonal location open in November of 2019 at North Star Mall—7400 San Pedro Dr., Suite 5600, San Antonio, TX 78216)

Dive into a world of candy at IT’Sugar, where you’re greeted by a rainbow cacophony of candy in every shape, size, and sweetness—or sourness, if that’s your preference. You can choose a custom mix by weight, creating a flavor profile that matches your sweetie. Another option is to go big: buy your true love’s favorite candy bar in a five-pound size, everyone’s dream: a box of cereal that’s only marshmallows.  IT’Sugar also features fun novelty candy, including said gummy bears as big as your head, and adult flavors such as Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, and Bailey’s Irish Cream chocolates.

This bear is large enough to be carved like a Thanksgiving turkey.
Nothing says healthful breakfast like a bowl of marshmallows, right?!
A few of the sweet treats you’ll enjoy at Kilwins. The chocolate-covered Rice Krispie treats and marshmallows are fantastic.

Kilwins (109 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, TX 78205)

A new sweet destination in San Antonio, Kilwins is part of a chain that was founded in 1947 and a stop we always make when we’re exploring Alamo Plaza. The sweet scent of melting chocolate and bubbling, creamy caramel greets you as you walk through the door into an old-time sweet shop. Rows and rows of eye-popping chocolate- and caramel-dipped apples, marshmallows, and Rice Krispie treats wait to be devoured. Or enjoy the caramel-covered pecans, cashews, and more, including an array of freshly made fudge and hand-crafted chocolates. There’s also gourmet cake and ice cream, including a five-chocolate cake.

When there’s a wall of “chocohol” treats to choose from, you can’t go wrong.

Lolli & Pops (Two locations: The Shops at La Cantera—15900 La Cantera Pkwy., San Antonio, TX 78256; (210) 561-7858 | North Star Mall—7400 San Pedro Ave., Suite 154, San Antonio, TX 78216; (210) 247-0253)

Stepping into Lolli & Pops is like going back to an old-time candy store, if that old-time store sold rum-infused gummy bears. With novelty sweets from around the world and an entire section dedicated to “chocohol,” this shop isn’t just for kids, though the bins filled with sweet treats will definitely make kids happy. You can pick a gift box, jar, or container and fill it to your heart’s content, or create a gift for the sweet lover in your life. And don’t miss the adult gummies with rosé, champagne, Irish crème, mai tai, sour mojito, and more. Just be sure to keep them away from your kiddos, because those are all for Mommy.

Ms. Chocolatier (Pearl Farmers Market, 312 Pearl Pkwy., San Antonio, TX 78215)

For us, fun at Pearl’s weekend market includes Ms. Chocolatier. With an array of hand-crafted chocolates and treats that includes spicy mango chocolate bark, Texas pecan chocolate, Mexican chocolate, and jalapeno peanut brittle, the unique flavors are a perfect treat for any true sweet fan who enjoys local flavor. If you can’t make the market, don’t despair: you can also find a selection of Ms. Chocolatier bars at Larder in Hotel Emma as well as some other local retail spots.

One of the terrific options from Ms. Chocolatier.

No. 9 Floral and Gifts (1701 Blanco Rd., San Antonio, TX 78201; (210) 232-4471)

I’m originally from New Orleans, so the NOLA-inspired feel of No. 9 Floral and Gifts always makes me happy. So does their terrific selection of truffles, sweets, and savories that they can expertly combine to create the perfect gift. The floral selection and amazing creations will amaze you, but keep your eye on the sugar prize: fabulous sweets. Or heck, get both and give yourself or someone special a terrific day. Liquor-infused truffles, chocolate-covered espresso beans, locally sourced treats like Chambord-infused chocolate-covered pecans, jalapeno pecan brittle, and “Borracho jelly beans” (Bloody Mary, Margarita, Pina Colada, and chile) are definitely not your usual gift basket fare.

Schakolad Chocolate Factory (112 Broadway St., San Antonio, TX 78205; (210) 354-3322)

Factory is part of the name on purpose: the chocolates you’ll find here aren’t shipped in from anywhere; they’re made using a tried and true, three-generation, European-style family recipe. You can surprise your sweetie with flavors like white wasabi ganache, or go old-school with chocolate-dipped strawberries and cherries. Even more fun: bring your sweetie along to watch everything as it’s made, or take a class together at the shop to learn how to do it yourselves. And be sure to enjoy a frozen hot chocolate while you pour over the chocolate options you can take home.

Woops! (Two locations: Ingram Park Mall—6301 NW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78238; (210) 875-6984 | North Star Mall—7400 San Pedro Ave., San Antonio, TX 78216; (210) 875-6984)

I literally stumbled across Woops! one day on my way through the mall, and my taste buds are forever grateful. Featuring 21 flavors of macarons, Belgian waffles, and Nutella and Dulce de Leche alfajores, along with other cookies and treats, Woops! allows you to customize gift boxes and even print messages on their macarons (pre-order required). The macaron colors and flavors are fantastic (the cookies ‘n’ cream and pina colada flavors are YUM!), and the gift boxing options are a fun way to customize a treat for anyone in your life. Online ordering is available too, but once again, why miss out on the opportunity to sample and enjoy while you shop?
