The National Museum of the Pacific War Salutes Educational Fun for Kids

Alamo City Moms Blog is excited to partner with Nimitz Junior Corps (NJRC) to bring you information about their upcoming programs. This is a sponsored post.

Have a child who can’t get enough of battle scenes and war history? A great way to foster your child’s interest in U.S. military history—World War II, in particular—is by registering him/her for the Nimitz Junior Corps (NJRC) program, a free, monthly two-hour session hosted by the National Museum of the Pacific War (NMPW) in Fredericksburg, Texas, approximately one hour from San Antonio.

The Nimitz Junior Corps strives to introduce children to the values, innovations, and experiences that led America to victory in World War II. Additionally, the NJRC seeks to develop the next generation of history enthusiasts, museum stewards, and overall good citizens. Hosted one Saturday a month from June through December (except September), the NJRC provides youth with a chance to develop an interest in history through interactive activities, exhibit exploration, science, and art that provides a deeper look into World War II. Each NJRC event focuses on a different topic, ranging from the life of the Japanese during WWII to the development of modern-day museum exhibits.

June Nimitz Junior Corps—Where in the World?: Geography of WWII

On Saturday, June 15, the museum will present “Where in the World?: Geography of WWII” featuring the use of a scale model map to explore the high seas of the Pacific. Corps members will also have the opportunity to learn about typhoons and the sea creatures present in this area of the world.

July & August Nimitz Junior Corps—East Meets West: the Japanese During WWII

The museum will host “East Meets West: the Japanese During WWII” on July 20 and August 17, where Corps members will get the chance to dive into the life of Japanese and Japanese Americans during WWII. On both dates, children will create origami, learn a few Japanese words, and uncover the childhood of those who grew up in Japanese internment camps. Two chances to enjoy this special session!

October Nimitz Junior Corps—Mystery of the Museum: Behind the Scenes

On October 19, the museum will host “Mystery of the Museum: Behind the Scenes.” During this event, Corps members will learn what makes the NMPW tick with a behind-the-scenes look at exhibit creation and educational research. Lastly, kids will be able to explore the Japanese Garden and discover how NMPW maintains the garden’s growth.

November & December Nimitz Junior Corps—Your Very Own USO Show!

“Your Very Own USO Show!” will be the last theme presented twice, on November 16 and December 21. Corps members will explore how the United States Organization (USO) kept military service members in touch with their families, friends, and country during WWII. On both dates, kids will get to design a set, prepare costumes, and perform for their own friends and family.

Nimitz Junior Corps is free of charge and open to children ages 8–12. Each event runs from 1:00–3:00 P.M., and space for Junior Corps members is limited. Participation is restricted to the first 15 registrants for each session, ensuring that your child will receive a more personal experience with NMPW’s knowledgeable instructors.
