San Antonio is a city that loves to celebrate the arts. From museums like SAMA and the McNay, to arts programs like Say Sí, and don’t forget First Friday, there are numerous ways to enjoy and inspire our own budding artists. One of my favorite family-friendly art events of the year is coming up this weekend: Artpace’s Chalk It Up, where local artists and organizations take over Houston Street and turn it into one giant piece of public art. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, October 14, from 10:00 A.M.–4:00 P.M.
Wait, I have to park downtown??
For anyone whose knee-jerk reaction is to freak out about finding parking downtown with kids in tow, have no fear. I’ve always had luck with parking in the Houston Street Parking Garage. Plus, it gives you a great overview of the artwork below. And it’s fun trying to spot your own handiwork when you’re done for the day.
I do recommend going to the event early, mainly so you and the kiddos don’t get too hot and you’re not out during lunch or naptime, but also because you’ll beat the crowds if you get there right at 10:00 A.M.
I also recommend dressing your kiddos (and yourself) in clothes that you’re willing to get dirty. Chalk isn’t always easy to wash out (especially when your kids basically roll in it all morning). And your kids will cover you in chalk, too, no matter how hard you try to stay clean yourself. But that’s kind of the point of this whole event.
Despite the chances of getting chalky, Chalk It Up is an event full of good, clean fun. There’s always a free chalk area, dozens of artists creating their own masterpieces, and a number of local organizations hosting activity tables. Artpace often has a screen printing table, too, so bring a bandana or a few bucks to purchase your own. And the giant spirograph is always a hit. We even took our giant art piece home and hung it on our wall once!
To sum things up, this is one of those unique events that I’ll be going to every year until my kids are grown. And I may keep going to afterwards. A huge thank you to Artpace for hosting this event every year. Come say hi if you see us there!
I can’t wait to take my kids this year! Thanks for the reminder. Hope to see ya there.
Omg, you read my mind about parking! Lol. This is SO helpful! Thanks so much for sharing.
