Are you a mama on the go? A mama whose kids’ activities interfere with your ability to keep your sanity while trying to feed your family healthy, sensible meals? Or maybe you are a mama who wasn’t blessed with the Betty Crocker gene?
I was asked to review Eat Well, a local meal service that focuses on healthy, fresh ingredients. Owned by Jill and Clayton Wentworth, their slogan is “If You Can’t Pronounce It, We Don’t Use It.” I love that. The meals are pre-prepared and refrigerated. All you have to do is pop them in the oven the night you are going to eat them. The meals will last in the fridge up to 5 days.
I was provided a $100 gift card to order whatever I liked from the Eat Well website so that my family could try it and I would then review it on this Blog. Not only did we score three evenings’ worth of meals, but the kids were fascinated by the concept of contributing to a local business. Dudette, who is only age 7, wanted clarification that her thoughts on Jill’s food were going to help the company advertise. She took the role of food critic very seriously. I had her hooked when I showed her the website and she helped me pick our meal selections. I’ve never seen a kid so excited about Sloppy Joes!
This meal service is perfect for families with hectic schedules (like mine) but who try to stay away from fast food or eating out, for moms with new babies (help a new mama out with some of these meals), or even for someone you know who is sick or elderly. The meal portions are individual, two person, or family size. Eat Well has one standard price, according to portion, for all meals. The menu changes weekly with the crowd favorites showing up frequently. Upon pickup, the meal containers are placed in a nice, sturdy tote for easy transport.
“Sloppy Joes” : Jill touts this meal as a “family favorite,” and it absolutely is! This meal comes with a generous portion of meat, a bag of whole wheat buns, and fresh green beans. The meat is obviously of great quality and the seasoning is just plain delicious. It’s been a few weeks since we ate these and I am still thinking about them. Honestly.
When my husband realized we were going to “ruin” ground beef (his obsession in life, by the way) with whole. wheat. buns., he started to balk on the way home from soccer practice that night. I reminded him he needed to set a good example for the kids as he pulled into a gas station to buy a package of hamburger buns. I told him those buns were staying hidden until we all gave the wheat ones a try. Before we could even all sit down at the table, Dude was already tearing pieces off his bun and proclaimed how good they were. Yep, the whole wheat buns are really, really good and dear hubby inhaled his entire Sloppy Joe in no time.
His borderline stale gas station buns did come in handy though because we used up all of the Eat Well buns and needed more for seconds!
“Jilly Chicken Nuggets”: Jill’s Chicken Nuggets, Roasted Potatoes, and Organic cooked Carrots are definitely great for the kids and us adults liked them too. My favorite part of the meal was the potatoes and the kids loved the nuggets. I often make my own nuggets to avoid the frozen food variety (and to attempt hiding veggies), but it can be time consuming for nights when we have sports and activities. These nuggets solve that problem!
Also, no one (I mean no one) in our family likes cooked carrots. We eat plenty of raw carrots and it is well established that raw carrots are the one people-food item that our dog won’t eat. However, we all vowed to give everything we were provided a try. Lo and behold, these cooked carrots were….wait for it…..good. And even the dog liked them (the kids got a huge kick out of the fact that Jill was even able to convert the dog into liking carrots!).
Spaghetti & Meatballs: Again we had some skeptics (no one is naming names, hubby) about the whole wheat pasta, but he was easily distracted with the meatballs. Did I mention my husband is a beef man? The meat and seasonings were similar to that in the Sloppy Joes, so this was easily a favorite too. There were a ton of meatballs and it was very nice that the spaghetti noodles were already cut up, making it truly ready to heat and serve.
Cookies: I ordered a couple of types of cookies for dessert. Yum!! The pumpkin snickerdoodles were a complete hit and I regretted I only ordered a half dozen. The chocolate chip cookies were good too, but the whole wheat flour was more evident here. The pumpkin snickerdoodles will be a repeat order in my house.
All of Eat Well’s portions are incredibly generous. We are a family of four and the family portions were more than plenty. The food containers are microwaveable and oven safe. I simply placed the containers on cookie sheets and popped them in the oven.
I did have to ultimately take the nuggets out of the container and spread them on the cookie sheet to get them to heat all the way through, but that was no big deal.
The ordering process on-line is super easy and clear and you can choose your convenient pick-up locations (Nakoma, Stone Oak, Broadway, and Boerne to name a few). When I placed my order it was just before they increased their pick-up days to 5 days per week….now if you order by midnight the night before you can pick it up the very next day! How convenient is that?
We are so excited that one lucky mama will win a $50 gift card to use for Eat Well meals of her choosing! What a better treat than a few nights off from cooking, especially during the busy holiday season!
