Date Nights In the City

It’s so incredibly easy to become absorbed in parenting and adulting that we fail to make time to enjoy life with our significant others. I’m definitely guilty of “not having time for fun.” But, I need to be better. It’s true that I’m no good to anyone if I haven’t been good to myself, and part of that includes spending time with my spouse without work or children interfering.

Of course, that’s easier said than done, right? It is for us anyway. We both had to commit to date nights no matter how much work we had to do or how many rooms we needed to clean. It was—and still is—important for us to carve out some time for the two of us to talk, laugh, eat, and just be together. I must admit that I’m not usually the planner of these dates. In fact, my husband handles the itinerary, which is great for me. We’ve been to a number of fabulous places here in San Antonio, but I want to share a few of my favorites:

Extreme Escape—Colonnade (9995 IH10 W., San Antonio, TX 78230 | (210) 641-2828)

I’d never been to an “escape the room” type of place, so I was very excited once we were in the car and he revealed the plan. We were in a room with two other groups (one couple and a family of three). I love riddles and thrillers, so it was the perfect choice for me. Working with strangers to solve a time-sensitive case involving magic and murder mystery was right up my alley. I think this one is going to be one of my most memorable dates.

Powerfactor’s Live Music Events

Live music gives me life. I’m not sure if it’s because I am a singer myself or because music feeds my soul. Regardless of the reason, I love going to The Lions Den events because I’m surrounded by great music and happy people. What’s even better is knowing that San Antonio has opportunities for us to enjoy music from my culture, especially from local artists and musicians. The organizers do a wonderful job scouting talent and executing the program, and I’m super excited about the next one!

Dinner Theater Murder Mystery Show

I loved this date because I’d been wanting to do a murder mystery dinner theater since forever! This particular one was hosted at the Emily Morgan downtown. At first, I was slow to “interrogate” my table mates, but according to the rules, you can’t trust anybody—not even the people you come with. I’m not sure why chatting with other couples is so fun, but I always enjoy those moments of shared experiences when we’re out for a night on the town.

Jazz, TX

This place made me want to become a lounge singer for real! The ambiance was wonderful, and the big band performance was captivating. We danced (though I don’t really know ballroom dancing) and just enjoyed the moment. It’s an obvious romantic location for a special date, but again, I love live music, so I would go back even if it wasn’t a special occasion.

It’s about time for the next one, and I think it’s going to be one of this season’s many fundraising galas. I’m ready to pull out the Spanx, get dolled up, and weep silently at my aching feet in heels. I’ve learned that I need a week’s worth of early bedtimes to have the stamina to remain alert past 9:00 P.M. But I’m still having fun, even when my eyelids are heavy and betraying me. San Antonio has so much to offer, and I hope you’ll take a moment to share a new experience with the partner(s) in your life.
