School’s out, and parents deserve a break too! With a selection of activities ranging in budget, a summer date night allows us to reconnect just when we need it most. Remember, our city is extremely child friendly, and bedtimes can be pushed back later in summer, so if you’re aiming to avoid the little ones (you didn’t get a babysitter for nothing, right?!), take a closer look at age limits and requirements. Here are 10 date night ideas for summer fun in San Antonio:
1. Take a stab at axe throwing.
This is alarmingly fun. Organized chaos in a warehouse with some friendly, adrenaline-induced competition by team members with names like “Kiss my Axe” does not disappoint. Laughter echos loudly in the building as you pair with other adventurous strangers and follow the advice of your axe-throwing guide.
2. Lasso up some fun at a live rodeo.
If you think the opportunity to attend a live rodeo comes only in February, think again! Tejas Rodeo offers live rodeo events every Saturday night from March to November. Strap on your boots, grab some BBQ, and then take a spin around the dance floor to the live band after the rodeo. What better way to spend a Saturday night?
3. Go furniture shopping.
Yep, you read that right! Ikea and Living Spaces offer a childcare area so you can leave your littles and stroll around, dreaming about replacing your Crayola-covered couches. Grab a snack, hold hands, and enjoy the scenery. Then leave with some frozen meatballs or a bookcase.
4. Jam out to live music.
There’s just something about the sound of a Texas band on a warm summer night with a cool drink in hand. Our city offers several establishments where you can get good food and great music. The Rustic is one of my faves, and I’ve heard great things about Picks. Who knows? You may even find yourself dancing under some romantic string lights.
5. Go back in time at a drive-in or outdoor movie.
Remember the movie scenes in Twister and Grease? Well, sprawling acres with just a tall movie screen peeking out and cars parked in front of it exists here in our own backyard! Pack some food, blankets, and camp chairs while you partake in a classic date night our parents and grandparents may remember. Mission Marquee even turned the drive-in to a walk-in and offers free movies this summer.
6. Whip up a culinary creation together.
Try something new together and take that skill home with you! Sur La Table and Central Market both offer cooking classes for couples. Make memories while learning a new recipe or preparation method so you can reflect on your fun date night when you’re at home on a Tuesday with kids begging for pizza.
7. Try some new tastes.
We have wine and we have whiskey, so basically, we have it all. If you don’t want to make a day out of a trip to the Hill Country wineries, Alamo Distilling Company or Rebecca Creek Distillery offer tours and have food trucks, karaoke, and live bands.
8. Sweat it out together.
Take a private yoga class, enjoy a hike at Eisenhower Park, or try your hand at rock wall climbing at Armadillo Boulders. Sneak in some quality time together while getting those endorphins going!
9. Embrace your inner artist.
Get those creative juices flowing as you create a masterpiece together. Pinot’s Palette and Painting with a Twist both offer couples paint sessions (bonus: both locations are BYOB). Hang up your new painting on the wall or put flowers in your new vase from Clay Casa so you can enjoy the memory of your fun date night every time you look at it!
10. Be a tourist in your own city.
San Antonio is a top tourist destination for a reason! Our city always has plenty to offer our visitors, so why not join in the fun? Ghost tours, mystery dinners, and special events at local museums can be a blast. Or grab an ice cream cone and see the Alamo at night! Facebook events pages as well as Groupon can be your guide as you fall in love with each other and our beautiful city all over again.
