Creating a Home Retreat: Simple Ways to Love the House You’re in.

This post is brought to you by the San Antonio Board of Realtors (SABOR).

The pandemic has forced many of us indoors for extended periods of time. Suddenly our homes are not just where we rest our heads but have become where we work, oversee our kids’ virtual learning, and where we entertain ourselves.

This may cause you to feel isolated, anxious, or depressed. However, fear not! Here are our top five quick, easy, and cost-effective things you can do right now to make your home feel more like a cozy retreat and less like a chamber of doom.

1. Spring Clean and De-clutter!

People spring clean for a reason; to de-clutter. According to Psychology Today, “having too many of your things in too small a place will lead you to feel that your home environment is your enemy, not your friend.” Most of us can relate to the anxiety induced by a cluttered space, but sometimes we don’t realize it when you’ve become used to it. If you have an at-home workspace, try moving everything out of your office except for the most essential items to see the effects for yourself!

2. Play With Pops of Color and Neutrals

Color psychology plays a huge, yet very subtle role in our temperament. Warm colors like red and orange are known to spur productivity while colors like yellow are known to promote creativity and happiness. At the same time, yellow, red, and orange can create a bit of anxiety when overdone. On the flip side, cool colors like green, blue, and purple are known for their calming effects. Introduce your favorite color scheme into your home in pastel tones and pair with neutrals to create a peaceful, relaxing feeling in your home.

3. Decorate with Plants or Greenery

Plants have been scientifically proven to create a calming effect due to the microbes in the soil which your body perceives. According to Gardening Know How, “The bacterium found in soil may stimulate serotonin production, which makes you relaxed and happier. Studies were conducted on cancer patients and they reported a better quality of life and less stress. Not only that, but plants literally add life to the room! They help us to create a routine by taking care of something else, which in turn, reminds us to take care of ourselves. There is extensive research and proof which demonstrates the effectiveness of plants ability to reduce anxiety and depression.

4. Light, It Makes a Difference!

Humans thrive best in natural light, which is why it feels so good to work in spaces with big open windows. In a recent article in Forbes Magazine, they state, “bad lighting is associated with a range of ill-health effects, both physical and mental, such as eye strain, headaches, fatigue and also stress.”

There is no doubt we all know spaces with more natural sunlight create a happier, lighter mood. However, not all of us benefit from giant windows creating a sun-filled room. Do not despair if you currently live in a cave-like scenario. You can drastically change your space by updating your lightbulbs to daylight lighting.

5. Smells

We all know how a cinnamon candle around the holidays can transform an environment. Scent is the strongest sense tied to memory, so pick a smell that brings up happy or tranquil memories. Candles are also a great tool for meditation. Lighting a candle every evening for 15 minutes and staring at the flame while you breathe a balanced breath and reflect on your day is a great ritual in the evenings. Maybe flames aren’t your preference? Essential oils and diffusers are a great alternative.
