You Can’t Plan for a Medical Emergency, But You Can Have an Emergency Plan

Alamo City Moms Blog is happy to partner with Baptist Emergency Hospital to share information about their services with our readers. This is a sponsored post.

A medical emergency is one of a parent’s worst fears. We do our best to keep our kids healthy, safe, and secure, yet many of us will face a medical emergency. Whether it’s a traumatic injury, a scary high fever, an allergic reaction, or chest pains, medical emergencies often come when we least expect. While we can never plan for an emergency, we can have a plan for when an emergency strikes. Here are some ways to make sure you’re better prepared:

Map out the closest emergency centers to your house.

Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the emergency centers close to your home. Note their hours (not all emergency centers are open 24 hours) and parking availability. In San Antonio, Baptist Emergency Hospital has seven locations thoughtfully arranged throughout the area, and each location is open 24/7. Find your closest location here

Verify which emergency centers take your insurance.

Of the two or three emergency centers closest to your location, check to see if your insurance is accepted. An out-of-network provider may be closer to your house but could also cost hundreds or thousands more. Educate yourself on the options. Baptist Emergency Hospital accepts most insurance plans. If applicable, a co-payment will be collected during your visit.

Bookmark the emergency center websites.

After you’ve selected two emergency centers as the best options for your family, bookmark their websites. Many emergency centers have real-time updates on wait times and allow you to check in online as you are en route to the facility. Some have apps that can be used to check wait times and check in. Baptist Emergency Hospital offers online check-in

Know which services are offered at different emergency centers.

Not all emergency centers offer the same services. A quick check on the website will let you know which services are available and may dictate where you seek care. While many emergency centers are free-standing ERs, Baptist Emergency Hospital is a fully licensed hospital offering overnight, inpatient care when needed.

Baptist Emergency Hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic testing and services including:

  • Complete blood cell counts
  • Complete metabolic profiles
  • CT scans
  • EKG and cardiac enzyme analysis
  • Flu screening
  • Liver panel
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Radiology
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Ultrasound
  • Urinalysis
  • X-rays

While we can all hope to avoid medical emergencies, San Antonio families are lucky to have Baptist Emergency Hospitals spread out around town to provide specialized, attentive care at the time when we need it most.

Michelle
Michelle moved to San Antonio eight years ago and yet still feels like a newcomer. She is rather smitten with the Alamo City. She and her husband met at Texas A&M and started their marriage in Minnesota. After six years of very cold winters, they returned to Texas. Michelle has two kids (12 and 9), along with a very quirky rescue dog and two rather cute guinea pigs. A former corporate food scientist turned part-time yoga instructor, she still takes her food very seriously—she just doesn’t get paid for it anymore. She is fueled by tea, cold brew coffee, yoga, dog walking, books and quickly googling answers to her kids eleventy million questions.
