A San Antonio Mom’s Getaway: Unwind and Recharge in Nearby Austin

Let’s be real, moms — we take care of other people ALL. DAY. LONG! So, this past week, I did the unthinkable: I dedicated a whole day and night to myself. I had a work conference in Austin, and a surprising amount of down time between sessions. I was able to stay overnight one evening, and it was just what the doctor ordered for my overstimulated self.

If you’re also ready for a little escape, here’s my go-to guide for the ultimate Austin retreat with shopping, spa time, and a budget-friendly overnight stay near downtown.

Retail Therapy on Burnet Road

Stella Dallas Boutique & Beyond

I’m kicking things off with a visit to Stella Dallas Boutique on 2nd Street. It’s an absolute must for chic, casual fashion that looks great on both school runs and self-care Saturdays. The gals working the store were also very helpful with styling me to get the exact look I was hoping for. Nearby, I also stopped in at Hemline and United Apparel Liquidators for more unique finds. If you’re craving a cute new top or cozy sweater for fall, these shops have you covered!

Lunch & Relaxation at Cafe Blue

I was craving some seafood, so I had a late lunch at Cafe Blue which is conveniently located, not far from the shops. Their crabcake Caesar salad did not disappoint, and the rolls were absolutely heavenly. If this is not your scene, there were lots of other dining options around the area, and I am certain you would be able to find something to suit your mood.

Spa Day at the JW Marriott Austin

Now, it’s time for the real highlight: a luxurious spa treatment at the JW Marriott Spa in downtown Austin. I like to indulge in a massage and facial combo to fully relax and reset. This spa specializes in stress relief treatments, which means I leave feeling like I’ve released a year’s worth of mom tension. Pro tip: be sure to book in advance, because they fill up quickly! You can book online, and the prices are pretty comparable to any other spa treatment facilities.

Evening Cocktails at The Edge Rooftop Bar

After your spa treatment, head on outside near the pool for a drink (or two) at The Edge Rooftop Bar at the JW Marriott. This rooftop bar has sweeping views of downtown Austin, and their signature margaritas are the perfect end to your mini getaway. Watching the city lights while savoring a cocktail? Yes, please! It was truly gorgeous, and I loved the vibe the relaxed environment gave with its comfortable seating and fire pits.

Overnight Stay at the Hyatt or Hilton

While my conference was at the JW, I did not want to spend the money to stay there overnight.  Just a block or two away are much more affordable options that also include free breakfast. I highly recommend either the Hyatt Place Austin Downtown or the Hilton Garden Inn near the JW Marriott (I stayed at the Hyatt and was impressed!). Both hotels offer modern rooms, friendly service, and are just a short walk away from the action — so no need to break the bank for some well-deserved alone time.

Why Wait?

We moms deserve some me-time every now and then. If you are looking for a fun getaway that does not require extensive travel (but still far enough away that no one can call you to run back home) and does not break the bank, Austin just may be the scene for you. Treat yourself to a day and night of rest, retail, and relaxation, and come back ready to conquer it all — one carpool at a time!
