Top Ten Bakeries in San Antonio

10 best bakeries in San Antonio

Sometimes writing for this blog can be tough work. I can’t tell you the amount of research that went into picking the ten best bakeries in the city, but I did it because I love you guys! I tried to pick places all over the city, and there are small shops, franchises and some other goodies. There’s also a mix between bread shops, pastry shops and everything in between. I went to each and every one of these stores, and I tried a lot of things, and my family and friends also tried lots of things. These are all honest opinions! I encourage you to not just take my word for it, go out and try these places!

CIA BAkery Cafe

  1.  CIA Bakery Cafe: This bakery is run by the pastry students at the Culinary Institute of America here in San Antonio. They sell some lunch food as well, but who can be bothered with a cup of soup and sandwich when there is a case full of amazing pastries staring back at you! On my last visit the big hit was the cream puff with passion fruit cream. I think that the Bakery Cafe has the best chocolate croissants in the city, and I also love the always changing agua fresca. If you’re looking for something adventurous, try the alfajores and anything chocolate!
  2. Bakery Lorraine: I’ve been going to Bakery Lorraine since their very first day at their shop. Before they opened the bakery, they had a booth at the Sunday Quarry Farmer’s Market, but now we can enjoy their macarons every day of the week! The specialty of Bakery Lorraine is definitely the macaron. They have an amazing display of flavors and colors. I can’t wait to see what they dream up for Christmas! If you want to try something extra, the triple ginger chocolate cookies! Bird Bakery
  3. Bird Bakery: Bird Bakery is more of a cupcake and brownie bakery located on Broadway in Alamo Heights. Their location is one of the funnest places to go for a girls’ lunch. My picks here are any of the cupcakes (if you want to see the most darling presentation, order a dozen mini cupcakes!). The Mexican chocolate brownies are also amazing.
  4. Great Harvest Bread: Although Great Harvest Bread also serves some sweets, this is mostly a bread bakery. they bake the most amazing Challah and their cinnamon bread is pretty much perfect. The best part is the free tasting you get every time you step in the store! Don’t forget to pick up a frequent buyers card!
  5. Choicolate: This is technically not a bakery since they don’t bake their treats, but Jaime Choi and Young Yang make the best chocolates in the city. If you’re looking for the perfect hostess gift, or a little pick me up for yourself, you can’t go wrong in this store! My favorites are the orange and the lemon squared. They also host tasting nights!
  6. HEB Bakery: I don’t want you to think I’m a total baked goods snob! There are plenty of amazing things to be had at the bakery counter of your local HEB. y favorites are the desserts for two! There are nights when I want a special treat for me and my husband, and HEB is an easy stop on the way home! My favorite is the strawberry cream cake.
  7. Trader Joe’s Frozen Food Aisle: This is my solution if you’re running out of time, but you want to impress your guests! The freezer aisle at Trader Joe’s carries macarons, lemon squares, and my personal favorite: chocolate croissants. This is an inexpensive way to have something ready in case your mother-in-law stops by unexpectedly!
  8. Nothing Bundt Cakes: This is a franchise store, but I’ve never had a bad experience here! There are many sizes of cakes, and I don’t think you can go wrong picking up a dozen bundtinis in different flavors. My personal favorite here is the white chocolate raspberry, but I also love the double chocolate! There are two locations in San Antonio.Let's Bake Cake Supplies
  9. Let’s Bake Cake Supplies: This isn’t a bakery, but it’s a bakery supply store for when you want to bake something at home. This store is full of decorator tips, boxes, pans, molds and anything else you can think of. The store also offers classes and has a very friendly staff. The other thing I love about this store is that there is a lot of room to move around. Lots of times supply stores are cramped, but I had no problem with the baby carrier here!
  10. Bistro Bakery: This is my emeritus top bakery. I think I may have cried a little bit when this bakery closed down. It was my own little bit of France in the middle of San Antonio. I can’t say enough good things about this bakery, and I’m still suffering from abandonment issues!

  1. Sarah, I’m still mourning Bistro Bakery too. It was divine! I used to take myself there for a special birthday breakfast each year, savoring an almond croissant while reading and writing. I could actually convince myself I was at a little bakery on the streets of Paris. It was bliss. I will always miss it.

  2. DROOL~~ We have a nothing bundt cakes here in Dallas… Actually right around the corner from my house! I go everytime I have special guests over 🙂 It is so good!

  3. I was born in San Antonio 🙂 There are some seriously yummy places to eat there! We’ll be driving through for the holidays on our way further south. Hopefully we’ll be able to visit a few of these bakeries. Thanks for sharing!
